Mystery Vacation....Post #1

I came up with this "brilliant" idea to plan a vacation on the sly without the kids knowing where we were headed.  It just sounded like fun to get all packed up and ready to go without them having a clue!  Ahhhh....but I didn't think about how hard it would be to plan on the sly....during the summer.....when they are always around!  It worked out and turned out to be a B.L.A.S.T!
Two days before heading out, Terry decided that we should rent a van for the week to avoid putting extra miles on ours, etc.  So, on Tuesday morning, he picked up the van and we met him in town to swap the luggage and head out.  Jokingly, I said maybe THAT should have been our vacation because they were just THRILLED with all the fun extras that this van had!  It did make for pleasant traveling, though.

Day #1

Trevor, Emily & Erin at Churchill Downs
Emily had been wanting to go to the home of the Kentucky Derby for awhile now, so imagine her excitement when we just "happened" to drive right by there & "decided" we might as well stop in! We all enjoyed that stop and learned a lot!  To run in the race, the horse must be a THREE YEAR OLD thoroughbred.....therefore a horse has only a 2 minute opportunity to win the race.  The gentleman on the horse in the collage above is a 76 year old horse trainer originally from around Antigo, WI!!

A Horse "nursing home"!
In my research of the Kentucky area, I found this horse farm near Lexington that has been donated to care for the elderly horses.  Most, if not ALL, the horses that are living here are retired race horses or movie actors.  It was a HOT day but we all seemed to forget about the heat while touring the farm on a golf cart.  The kids love being able to get up close to the horses and feeding them while learning a lot from our horse-loving guide.

An impromptu stop!
On our way to the Old Friends farm, we saw the sign along the road for a candy factory tour.  Sneaking inside for a tour sounded like a great way to cool off!  What a fascinating story about a very independent lady in the early 1900's that not only ran her own candy store/factory, but she came up with her own KIND of candy.  She faced a lot of trials in her lifetime, but the candy store/factory is still being run today....by her grandson!
